About Us
Bryant Elementary School envisions a culturally responsive, arts-integrated learning environment where students continually succeed and flourish. Our mission is to nurture the whole child—academically, socially, and creatively—by fostering a community that values diversity, equity, and excellence in education.
Named after the renowned American poet and influential newspaper editor William Cullen Bryant, our school has a rich and proud history. The original building was constructed in 1912 at a cost of $53,600, designed by architect C.T. Beardsley as an eight-room, fireproof facility for 509 students. Just three years later, in 1915, four additional classrooms were added to accommodate our growing community.
In 1987, plans to renovate Bryant School began, culminating in a major construction project that started in 1995. With the collaborative efforts of parents, staff, and administrators, and the architectural expertise of DeCarlo and Doll, Inc., the school was transformed. Two new additions provided space for eight classrooms, a library/media center, specialized rooms for art, music, reading, math, ESL, and a learning center. A state-of-the-art kitchen/cafeteria, a multi-purpose room for physical education, and offices for support staff were also included.
On August 26, 1997, the newly renovated Bryant School reopened its doors to 560 students from Pre-K through sixth grade, continuing its legacy of educational excellence.
Throughout its over 100-year history, Bryant School has been led by a dedicated group of principals, beginning with Miss Anna Rickard, who served an extraordinary 43 years from 1912 to 1954. The leadership legacy includes:
